Are You at Risk for Osteoporosis?

If your bone mineral density results indicate that you are at an increased risk for fracture, your provider will recommend treatment options as well as the time frame for a follow-up scan. Treatment or prevention of osteoporosis may include: increasing Calcium and Vitamin D intake, weight bearing exercise, Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMS) such as Evista, and/or Biphosphonate medications (e.g. Actonel, Fosamax, or Boniva).
The following are genetic and environmental factors with may increase your risk of developing osteoporosis:
- Caucasian or Asian ethnicity
- Menopausal or Post-Menopausal Women
- Thin frame or low body weight (less than 127 pounds)
- Smoking
- An inactive (sedentary) lifestyle
- Inadequate intake or absorption of calcium and vitamin D
- Excessive alcohol or caffeine consumption
- Family history of osteoporosis
- Long term use of high risk medications (Prednisone, corticosteroids)
If you have two or more of the above risk factors and are post menopausal, you are a good candidate for screening. Please consider calling our office to schedule an appointment or discuss this further with your provider at your next annual exam.
